About the Federation Bridge
This service lets your Bikelog rides show up on Mastodon (and other compatible fediverse servers) without you having to copy-paste anything. You stay on your own Mastodon account; the bridge just posts on your behalf when a new ride is logged.
How a ride gets posted
- You log a ride on Bikelog as usual.
- Bikelog notifies the bridge that a new ride exists.
- The bridge reads the ride details — title, distance, duration, sport — and posts a short status to your Mastodon account.
- The post links back to the ride on Bikelog so people can click through.
This usually happens within a few seconds of you finishing the ride entry. Only rides created within the last 24 hours are eligible; older rides (or bulk imports) are never automatically posted.
What gets posted to Mastodon
An example post looks like this:
Afternoon MTB Ride
42 km · 2h 14m · MTB
https://www.bikelog.de/ride.php?id=1234
https://www.bikelog.de
#cycling #mtb #bikelog.de
If the ride has a map image, that's attached too (with alt text). Rides marked as private on Bikelog — or with stats hidden — are skipped.
What the bridge stores
- Your Bikelog username and numeric ID.
- Encrypted access tokens for Bikelog and your Mastodon instance (so the bridge can post on your behalf).
- A record of which rides were posted, and where (the Mastodon status URL).
- A log of incoming notifications so the same ride can never be posted twice.
Tokens are encrypted at rest with a key the bridge alone holds; no Bikelog or Mastodon credentials are stored in plain text.
What the bridge does not do
- It doesn't read your replies or mentions on Mastodon.
- It doesn't run its own social network — your audience stays on your existing Mastodon account.
- It doesn't post anything other than newly-logged rides. It will never bulk-post historical rides or imports.
- It doesn't share your raw GPS files anywhere.
Staying in control
- Disconnect Mastodon from the dashboard to stop posts immediately. Your past posts stay where they are.
- Export your data from the dashboard to download a CSV of everything the bridge has about you.
- Delete your data from the dashboard to wipe your account from the bridge in one step. Your Mastodon posts stay where they are; only the bridge-side record goes.
- You can also revoke the bridge's access at any time from Bikelog's connected-apps page or your Mastodon instance's "Authorized apps" page.
What is the fediverse, briefly?
Mastodon, Pleroma, GoToSocial, and similar servers form an interconnected social network called the "fediverse." Your account lives on one server (your instance, e.g. mastodon.social), but you can follow and be followed by people on any other instance. The bridge works with any instance that speaks the Mastodon API.
